The Problem

There are conflicting reports as to why there are an estimated 70 million homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. struggling to survive on a given day.   To put that in perspective, there are approximately 568,000 homeless people in the U.S. Homeless dogs and cats outnumber homeless people 123:1 in the U.S. Some statistics report it’s mainly because people fail to spay and neuter their pets, (only 10% of dogs and cats who enter shelters are spayed or neutered), allowing these unspayed and unneutered pets to bring more offspring into a world that already has too many animals in need of homes.

Others report that pet problems are the most common reason people desert and abandon their pets (pet problems were defined as problematic behaviors, aggressive behaviors, grew larger than expected, or health problems the owner couldn’t handle). It’s reported that 30% of animals entering animal shelters are surrendered by their owners, and that an overwhelming 70% of people who acquire animals end up giving them away, abandoning them, or taking them to shelters. Those are not good odds for a loving and loyal dog who just wants to be loved deserves to be properly cared for. Not to mention, shelters are so full that many need to turn dogs away. What’s even more disheartening, is that less than half of the 3.3 million dogs who enter shelters each year are fortunate enough to be adopted. Many shelters do not have the support or bandwidth to successfully adopt out the dogs they have as fast as they would like to. This makes it super difficult for shelters to find room to bring in and house more dogs to try and save.
